How to Manage and Relieve Pain From Arthritis

The word arthritis makes many people think of painful, stiff joints.

But there are many kinds of arthritis, each with different symptoms and treatments. Most types of arthritis are chronic. That means they can go on for a long period of time.

Arthritis can attack joints in almost any part of the body. Some types of arthritis cause changes you can see and feel — swelling, warmth and redness in your joints. In some kinds of arthritis, the pain and swelling last only a short time, but are very uncomfortable. Other types of arthritis might be less painful, but still slowly cause damage to your joints.

Common kinds of arthritis

Arthritis is one of the most common diseases in the United States. Older people most often have osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or gout.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of arthritis in older people. OA starts when tissue, called cartilage, that pads bones in a joint begins to wear away. When the cartilage has worn away, your bones rub against each other. OA most often happens in your hands, neck, lower back, or the large weight-bearing joints of your body, such as knees and hips.

OA symptoms range from stiffness and mild pain that comes and goes to pain that doesn’t stop, even when you are resting or sleeping. Sometimes OA causes your joints to feel stiff after you haven’t moved them for awhile, like after riding in the car. The stiffness goes away when you move the joint. Over time, OA can make it hard to move your joints. It can cause a disability if your back, knees or hips are affected.

Why do you get OA? Growing older is what most often puts you at risk for OA, possibly because your joints and the cartilage around them become less able to recover from stress and damage. OA in the hands may run in families. OA in the knees can be linked with being overweight. Injuries or overuse may cause OA in such joints as knees, hips or hands.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease, a type of illness that makes your body attack itself. RA causes pain, swelling and stiffness that lasts for hours. RA can happen in many different joints at the same time. People with RA often feel tired or run a fever. RA is more common in women than men.
RA can damage almost any joint. It often happens in the same joint on both sides of your body. RA can also cause problems with your heart, muscles, blood vessels, nervous system, and eyes.

Gout is one of the most painful kinds of arthritis. It most often happens in the big toe, but other joints can also be affected. Swelling may cause the skin to pull tightly around the joint and make the area red or purple and very tender.

Eating foods rich in purines like liver, dried beans, peas, anchovies, or gravy can lead to a gout attack. Using alcohol, being overweight and taking certain medications may make gout worse. In older people, some blood pressure medicines can also increase the chance of a gout attack. To decide if you have gout, your doctor might do blood tests and X-rays.

Warning signs

You might have some type of arthritis if you have:
  • Ongoing joint pain.
  • Joint swelling.
  • Joint stiffness.
  • Tenderness or pain when touching a joint.
  • Problems using or moving a joint normally.
  • Warmth and redness in a joint.
If any one of these symptoms lasts more than two weeks, see your regular doctor or one who specializes in treating arthritis, called a rheumatologist. If you have a fever, feel physically ill, suddenly have a swollen joint, or have problems using your joint, see your doctor right away.

Treating arthritis

Getting enough rest, doing the right exercise, eating a healthy, well-balanced diet and learning the right way to use and protect your joints are keys to living with any kind of arthritis. The right shoes and a cane can help with pain in the feet, knees and hips when walking. There are also gadgets to help you open jars and bottles or to turn the doorknobs in your house.

Some medicines can help with pain and swelling. Acetaminophen might ease arthritis pain. Some people find NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), like ibuprofen, naproxen and ketoprofen, helpful. Some NSAIDs are sold without a prescription, while others must be prescribed by a doctor. Be very careful about possible side effects of some NSAIDs, whether sold with or without a prescription. Read the warnings on the package or insert that comes with the drug. Talk to your doctor about if and how you should use acetaminophen or NSAIDs for your arthritis pain. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has more information about these drugs.

Osteoarthritis (OA). Medicines can help you control the pain. Rest and exercise may make it easier to move your joints. Keeping your weight down is a good idea. If pain from OA is very bad, there are shots your doctor can give you.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Treatment can help the pain and swelling. This might slow down or stop joint damage. You may feel better and find it easier to move around. Your doctor might also suggest anti-rheumatic drugs called DMARDs (disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs). These can slow damage from the disease. Other medicines known as corticosteroids (like prednisone) can ease swelling. Another kind of drug, called a biologic response modifier, blocks the damage done by the immune system. These may help people with mild-to-moderate RA when other treatments have not worked.

Gout. The most common treatment for an acute attack of gout is NSAIDs or glucocorticoids, like prednisone. They can bring down the swelling, so you may start to feel better within a few hours after treatment. The pain usually goes away within a few days. Glucocorticoids are strong medicines. They should be taken only with a doctor’s prescription. If you have had an attack of gout, talk to your doctor to learn why you had the attack and how to prevent future attacks. If you have had several attacks, your doctor might prescribe medicines to prevent future ones.

Exercise can help

Along with taking the right medicine and properly resting your joints, exercise might help with arthritis symptoms. Daily exercise, like walking or swimming, helps keep joints moving, lessens pain and makes muscles around the joints stronger.

Three types of exercise are best if you have arthritis:
  • Range-of-motion exercises, like dancing, might relieve stiffness, keep you flexible, and help you keep moving your joints.
  • Strengthening exercises, like weight training, will keep or add to muscle strength. Strong muscles support and protect your joints.
  • Aerobic or endurance exercises, like bicycle riding, make your heart and arteries healthier, help prevent weight gain, and also may lessen swelling in some joints.
The National Institute on Aging (NIA) has a free booklet on how to start and stick with a safe exercise program.

Other things to do

Along with exercise and weight control, there are other ways to ease the pain around joints. You might find comfort by using a heating pad or a cold pack, soaking in a warm bath or swimming in a heated pool.

Your doctor may suggest surgery when damage to your joints becomes disabling or when other treatments do not help with pain. Surgeons can repair or replace some joints with artificial (man-made) ones.

Other remedies

Recent studies suggest that acupuncture may ease OA pain for some people. Research also shows that two dietary supplements, glucosamine and chondroitin, may help lessen moderate to severe OA pain, but they seem to have no effect on changes to cartilage in the knee. Scientists continue to study these kinds of alternative treatments. Always check with your doctor before trying any new treatment for arthritis.

Many people with arthritis try remedies that have not been tested or proven helpful. Some of these, like as snake venom, are harmful. Others, like copper bracelets, are harmless, but also unproven.

How can you tell that a remedy may be unproven?
  • The remedy claims that a treatment, like a lotion or cream, works for all types of arthritis and other diseases.
  • Scientific support comes from only one research study.
  • The label has no directions for use or warning about side effects.
  • The person recommending the treatment profits directly from your purchase of the medicine.
  • People who are now completely well are presented to you as having the same problems you have (this is called anecdotal evidence).
Talk to your doctor

Pain and arthritis do not have to be part of growing older. You can work with your doctor to safely reduce the pain and stiffness and to prevent more serious damage to your joints.

Money from online surveys

If you’re paying attention to spam, you might have come across these ads about getting paid for answering surveys. While a lot of them might seem bogus, there’s a number of websites that do actually pay you for minutes of your time answering survey forms.
MSN Money discusses the potential value of these surveys. Here’s basically how it works, you fill out survey forms online and you get paid from anywhere from a few cents to a few dollars (around $15 to $20 max). These would take a few minutes to accomplish. The longer the form, the higher the payout typically.
Now the question is if you can get rich with such activities. The key idea here is to gauge how much effort you put in for the payout. Money is money and a few added bucks into your monthly income is always welcome. However, as many would point out, this can be tedious work.
It shouldn’t replace any full time work that you have. And you have to pay tax as well so that’s less real spending money. However, it’s work that can be done by stay-at-home moms in those times when there’s a lull in housework or even by full-time workers wanting to earn up to a few hundred dollars monthly. Some surveys also give you freebies to base survey answers with. Freebies are freebies.
You also have to be savvy enough to weed out spam and bogus paid survey ads on the web.

I got my new Addidas Superstar

I got another pair of superstar. It took me a while before I found a pair in my size. When I tried them I was so impressed with just how comfortable they are, and they looked great with jeans & casual clothes. I use them for tennis as well as basketball and they worked great for both. They give me great ankle support and are good for quick movements. Not to mention they look great with athletic clothes as well as jeans.

Protein Supplements

Why buy protein supplements if you can get enough protein from the food you eat, you ask. The answer lies in bio-availability, or the actual absorption of proteins by the body upon ingestion.
Immediately after an intensive workout, muscles are damaged and need to be repaired During this brief period, the muscle are especially receptive to nutrient and the blood flow to the exercised muscle is high. Supplements like fast acting whey protein shakes are quickly absorbed and digested, allowing protein to reach the muscles in the time for better recovery and muscle growth.
Eating a high protein meal immediately after workout won't yield the same muscle growth because protein from food needs to be broken down first into different amino acids, then reassembled again to form the necessary protein required for muscle repair. This process takes long, longer than the period when the muscle are receptive to supply protein

is it true I'll lose more weight if I drink Coffee?

The caffeine in coffee is linked to adiponectin levels, which enhances your insulin sensitivity and your sugat tolerance, helping your body manage sugars better. Researchers also found that eating carbohydrates and caffeine together use up more fat during exercise that just eating carbs to refuel.
-Nice info isnt? :)

Hot or Cold Compress?

There seems to be a lot of confusion about which therapy to use following an injury… heat or ice? Most people know to use ice immediately following a sports injury, but when is it appropriate to use heat? Heat is arguably much more comfortable than a frosty cold pack, but there are advantages to both that are very important to your recovery regardless of comfort. The following is a simple guideline for the use of heat and ice therapy.

The first thing to understand is that there are two basic types of injuries/pain: acute pain and chronic pain. Acute pain arises rapidly and is usually short-lived in nature (i.e. ankle sprains). Acute injuries occur immediately and are often the result of some sort of trauma which result in pain (possibly severe pain). Acute injuries often occur as a result of a fall, collision, or some other form of trauma. Acute injuries have some common signs and symptoms including pain, tenderness, swelling, redness, and the skin is often warm to the touch.

Chronic pain develops slowly and is long-lasting (i.e. arthritic knee). These injuries are much more subtle than acute injuries and may often be sporadic in nature. Many times these injuries are caused by overuse, such as wrist injuries with prolonged typing at work. These injuries can stem from acute injuries that are not treated properly, which leads to the development of a chronic condition. Some common signs of chronic injuries include prolonged soreness, tenderness, no swelling, no inflammation, and decreased range of motion.

In general, ice therapy should be used for acute injuries or injuries which take place within 48-72 hours. Cold therapy is best for these types of injuries because the cooling effect of ice constricts the blood vessels and limits bleeding and inflammation to the injured tissue. Ice is effective in decreasing swelling and inflammation and should be used directly after an injury.

On the other hand, heat therapy, such as a hot pack, can be used for injuries which do not have inflammation with associated swelling. Heat dilates or opens the blood vessels and allows increased blood flow to the area, which is good for relaxation of muscles. On the other hand, if heat is used for swollen muscles or joints, increased inflammation can actually increase inflammation. Heat is an excellent therapy for sore muscles and joints which have been painful for longer than 48-72 hours. Heat therapy can also be used prior to exercise/activity in those with a chronic injury to loosen muscles and joints.

General Take-Home Messages Heat/Ice Application:

Only use ice directly following an injury for the first 48-72 hours.
Only use heat for injuries which have been present for more than 48-72 hours.
After activity, only use ice (even if chronic-type pain).
If using contrast therapy (i.e. ice 10 min., heat 10 min, ice 10 min., etc.), always finish with ice.
When in doubt, use ice (except prior to activity).
Never leave heat or ice on an injured area for more than 20 minutes at a time.
Do not fall asleep with a heat or ice pack on!!

How to make a heat pack at home:

Moist heat is best, so boil a towel or microwave a wet towel (30-60 seconds) or use a store-bought heat pack and apply for no more than 20 minutes. If skin becomes too hot or irritated, remove hot pack and let cool before applying again.

How to make an ice pack at home:

Place ice in a Ziploc bag with a little bit of water and cover bag with a paper towel, apply to affected area. You can also use an ice cube to massage the injured area. There are many excellent form-fitting ice packs available on the market as well for convenient use.

*If ice is applied to an injury for 48 hours with no improvement, consult Green Health Acupuncture or your physician.

The Right One

Somebody once told me that "finding the right
person is very hard and very wrong... it is best
to be the right person for the one you love and
start from there... You'll always end up
disappointed when you set standards and define
a "right person" for you... and don't rush
things...

You can never be perfect...the person you love
can never be perfect...but both of you can be
perfect through love and prayers, and your love
can be perfect through the both of you.

Our relationships fail not because (s)he's not
the right person...it's because we expected too
much and we decided on our own...let God do the
work...you may call it waiting time...but whileyou are waiting...

Love is not what you think it is...Sometimes we
mistakenly feel that our first relationship will
be our last. Because we are overwhelmed with joy
and romance, we forget to learn the meaning of
true love. Some are saying that love is:

*unselfish, blind, unconditional or simply denying one
self for the sake of someone very important inour life.
Others are saying love is immortal and can never be defined.

When we think we're in lovethe first thing we almost wanted the whole world
to know is that our love for someone very specialcan never be taken away from us.

We say this phrase:

*you are the most wonderful gift I have ever received...

After a terrible fight or sometimes even a petty quarrel we then say:

*You are the biggest mistake I've ever made for my entire life!!!
*di mo deserve ang pagmamahal na handa kong ibigay sayo.
*i hope ur heart gets broken a million pieces. I pray u somebody hurts u the way u've been hurting me
*..wala kang kwentang tao. sarili mo lang naiintindihan mo. lubayan mo na ako. wag mo na guluhin buhay ko. i will my realationship with (put name here)

Now, how do you say and spell the word L-O-V-E? Are you really deeply into it?

Nobody can tell what love really is untilexperience speaks and whispers right into ourears. Most of the time, these love promiseslike:

would end up:

*"Never" and "We should part ways,
*you are dead to me,JM. u dont exist. u are dead to me.

Many times we thought after having
committed to someone and your trust to one
another freezes down to zero degrees "SHe ain't
the right one. I should probably wait for the
right one to come." But the big question anyone
could not answer is "she the right one?"
and "When is the right time?" That made us stick
to whom we are with. Will you always be waiting
for the right person to come and the right time
to commit? A big YES is the answer. Don't be in a
hurry to get into a relationship because you can
never find love if you insist that you are
already into it. Try to find time to really
understand your real feelings, to know who you
really are, and what you really want in a
relationship, You're right, there is no such
thing as a perfect relationship, but there's
acompatible partnership that goes along with it.
If you already knew that you're too big to fit
into a small sized t-shirt, don't give it a try.
You'll probably break it and pay for the damages
you have made. If you knew and felt that there
lationship will not last, don't go deeper into it.
You'll just suffer the consequences and live
like hell the rest of your life.

It's really hard to say goodbye though, but you
can't make it any better by just pretending you
still have the same feelings. Try to let go and
give yourself a chance to live life to thefullest.
Give yourself a chance to grow and give
your heart a much needed attention. Then you
crying as we try to let go. We are
wrong, it's just pity. We call it love when we're
too attached and think that losing the one we
love will somehow make us weak and unable to face
to storms of life. We misunderstood, its just
that we're too much dependent to them. We call it
love when we give our whole life to them, the
wholeness of us and imagined that if they leave
no one would accept us and our past. We are
mistaken, its just insecurity. But no matter what
the definition is, the truth still remains that
love isn't something you can bury nor beg. It is
real and existing. You can't touch it but you can
feel it in your heart. You can't find it, but it
will knock before you when you least expect it to
come. It can make you the happiest soul in
heaven, but don't forget that it also can make
you the most miserable person in the whole galaxy.
